Here’s a look back at what you might have missed in the world of Whip It Out last week while you were busy trying to figure out if you’ve been naughty or nice this year…

On WhipItOutComedy.com:

We celebrated Festivus.

Eddie Izzard taught us a history lesson.

We found out what happens when a 16-year-old loser asks a girl out.

We asked Kyle Kinane a bunch of dumb questions.

We sent a letter to Santa.

We serenaded our inflatable girlfriend.

We discovered hip hop can be really normal.

We felt sick watching the adventures of Fat Superman.

We explored the origins of Will Ferrell’s Landlord video.

We hit the streets looking for the secret to a good relationship.

Meanwhile, on WhipItOutMusic.com:

Saigon’s “Come On Baby”

The Magnetic Fields’ “100,000 Fireflies”

The White Stripes “Effect and Cause”

The Black Crowes “Feelin’ Alright”

Dr. Dre and Eminem’s “What’s The Difference”

Office’s “Oh My”

We tipped you off to 10 songs you should download.

“I say after it’s all said and done, I’m gonna be way ahead of them, you’ll never see a better one.”

We didn't want to like Saigon. We tend not to be fans of rappers who gain notoriety on Entourage. But, we've gotta admit - he's pretty damn good. And this song is particularly worth checking out.

“ I have a mandolin. I play it all night long. It makes me want to kill myself.”

This video for the Magnetic Fields' "100,000 Fireflies" isn't even an official video. But it is pretty cool and the animation seems to perfectly fit the oddly irresistible nature of this song.

“Well I ain’t saying I’m innocent, in fact the reverse, but if you’re headed to the grave you don’t blame the hearse.”

When the White Stripes aren't busy making ridiculously cool videos, they can usually be found turning in amazing live performances. Even on television shows. Even in England. Like this performance from the Jools Holland show.

“Gotta stop believin’ in all your lies, ‘cause there’s too much to do before I die.”

When we first came across this clip of the Black Crowes performing on the David Letterman show way back in 1994 we were psyched and figured we'd see a nice performance of "Hard to Handle" or "Remedy." To our surprise, it's actually the Crowes covering the classic song "Feelin' Alright." Quite a find.

"I'll be catching bitches while bitches be catching feelings."

People like to pretend that live hip hop is somehow not as entertaining as seeing a band live, but those people are just going to the wrong hip hop shows. Watch this clip from 2004's "Up In Smoke" Tour Dr. Dre, Eminem and Xzibit and tell us that you wouldn't have liked to have been there.

"Oh my God, I really want somebody else."

Porn valley meets rockers Office meets the 1980's in this slightly odd, but theoretically interesting video for the song "Oh My."

Ten tracks for your free downloading pleasure with a little help from our online friends...

“Come On Baby” by Saigon with Jay-Z and Swizz Beatz
(Courtesy of Audiversity)
Holy shit. If you download one song from this mix, this should be the one.

“Lost Days” by Low Scores
(Courtesy of Milk Milk Lemonade)
Grimy guitar licks meet electronica and somehow it works really well.

“Ludacrismas” by Ludacris
(Courtesy of Burntpiano)
This song’s fine, but it’s really getting posted as a tribute to 30 Rock’s Ludacrismas party episode last week.

“Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” by Bob Dylan
(Courtesy of Ryan’s Smashing Life)
A live and reggae’d up version of a classic song. Never heard Dylan sing a song quite this funky.

“Two Hippies” by Squaaks
(Courtesy of Pasta Primavera)
The drums grab you right from the get go and force you to bob your head.

“Smell Yo’ Dick” by Riskay
(Courtesy of Pinglewood)
I don’t even know what to say about this one. It’s either the funniest or worst rap song I’ve heard in a long time. Maybe both.

“Rockin’ In The Free World” (acoustic) by Pearl Jam
(Courtesy of He’s A Whore)
Eddie and company don’t need to be plugged in to rock.

“Make Way” by Birdman with Fat Joe and Lil’ Wayne
(Courtesy of Corporate Bloggin)
Apparently there’s a lot of good hip hop floating around online this week.

“Business Time” by Flight of the Conchords
(Courtesy of Tunes Consumed)
“Wednesday we make sweet weekly love.” Classic.

“Bold Soul Sister” by Ike & Tina Turner
(Courtesy of Moistworks)
This one’s for you, Ike.

Here’s a look at what you may have missed last week on WhipItOutComedy.com and WhipItOutMusic.com while you were busy trying to figure out who in your office got you that crappy Secret Santa gift.

Just like The Office, but with a lot more weed.

“You are home.”

We caught Almost Famous, one of our favorite music movies, on TV this weekend and we haven’t been able to get Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” out of our head since. So we figured we’d pass that delight on to you now as well.

“I’m the best there is, ya got that?”

The documentary/concert DVD Fade To Black about the making of what was supposed to be Jay-Z’s “retirement” album is well worth checking out – especially for the footage of Jay in the studio with some of the best producers in the game. Our personal favorite is this scene of Timbaland offering up some beats for Jay to choose from – the winning one of course being "Dirt Off My Shoulder."

“My friends say I’m uncool, but I just let love rule.”

We love videos that are based on a really simple but unique concept and this video for Alphabeat’s “Boyfriend” more than fits that description. Who knew that playing shadow instruments could be so mesmerizing?

“Even white boys gotta shout.”

You have to love Richard Cheese and Lounge Against The Machine. Not only can they take classic tunes like "Baby Got Back" and "Personal Jesus" and turn them into funny cover versions, but they actually manage to turn them into good songs as well.

“I know she’s waiting, just anticipating, a thing that you’ll never ever possess.”

We don’t know what year this clip of Otis Redding performing “Try a Little Tenderness” is from and we don’t know what show it’s from, but we do know it’s one of the all time greats performing one of his best songs so it’s well worth your time.

“It don’t come much more sick than you, I can go on if you want me to.”

You might think that the video for the Fratellis “Flathead” was essentially the iPod commercials that used to run 100 times a day, but the band actually produced their own real video for the song. And you know what? It’s pretty cool.

“I got the flow like Pac, I got the weight like Biggie, I got the muscle just like I was Vitamin 50.”

Is Ohio the next hotbed of hip hop? Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, but this track from Hi-Tek and featuring a bunch of local talent certainly seems promising.

“I came, I saw I conquered, from record sales to sold out concerts.”

What do you get when Jay-Z, Linkin Park and Paul McCartney team up? A performance that’s equal parts fascinating and forgettable. In case you forgot that this actually happened at the Grammy’s a few years ago, here’s video proof to remind you.

“Come on now, try and understand, the way I feel under your command.”

Remember Natalie Merchant? Yeah, probably not. Seems like a different lifetime in which she and her 9,999 other Maniacs took to the MTV Unplugged stage and rocked this cover of “Because The Night” with the help of a wicked strings section.

Way back in 2004, we saw a fantastic documentary about DJ culture called Scratch. We're pretty sure nobody else has ever seen it and that's a mistake. So do us a favor, find someplace to rent this flick and check it out. If you need more convincing, here's the trailer.

“I am so homesick for some place that I will never be.”

This clip features moody rockers The Bravery putting forth a solid stripped down version of their song "Time Won't Let Me Go" when they stopped by a radio station for a bit.

“I once was lost, but now I’m found. I was blind, but now I see.”

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings are amazing. That's really all we need to say. If you don't believe us, check out this clip of their performance on a French TV show which is kicked off with quick rendition of "Amazing Grace" before picking up the pace.

We're back with a little somethin-somethin for you to groove to this week. As usual, there's no rhyme or reason to the songs we've selected, but they're all available for free download online at the moment and you should trust our judgement and add them to your collection.

"Barely Legal" by The Strokes
(Courtesy of Achtung Baby)
We try to hate the Strokes, but we keep finding songs of theirs to like.

"Bad Education" by Tilly and the Wall
(Courtesy of Michael Chagnon)
Ever wonder what a band that features a tap dancer as an instrument in their music sounds like?

"Shakin" by Rooney
(Courtesy of Minneapolis Fuckin Rocks)
Perfect driving music. Unless you're sitting in traffic. In which case, you're on your own.

"War Pigs" by Cake
(Courtesy of Quarterlife Party)
Like you're really going to be surprised to find out that Cake's cover of this classic song is great?

"Anyone Else But You" by The Moldy Peaches
(Courtesy of The Music Slut)
We haven't been able to get this song out of our head since we saw Juno.

"Unemployed Black Astronaut" by Busdriver
(Courtesy of Under The Rotunda)
Busdriver's like the poor man's Pigeon John. And we mean that as a compliment.

"Darling Corey" by Crooked Still
(Courtesy of Anyone's Guess)
Technically, we guess this is bluegrass music. We prefer to categorize it as "Music that sounds like Deadwood."

"The Coolest" by Lupe Fiasco
(Courtesy of Attorney Street)
Lupe sounds urgent - the kind of urgent you lose once you "make it."

"Despite What You've Been Told" by Two Gallants
(Courtesy of Music of the Moment)
You might not like a Two Gallants song the first time you hear it, but by the third time, it will be your favorite song of the day.

“I’ll wait, I’ll wait, for something good, for something great.”

We're big Ben Kweller fans and "Penny On The Train Track" might be our favorite song of his. It's impossibly catchy, and we have to warn you that after you watch this clip of Kweller performing the song live on David Letterman (with a little help from Paul Schaeffer on keyboard), it will likely be stuck in your head for at least the next week.

“Love is a burning thing, and it makes a firey ring”

The year was 1970. Johnny Cash had a cheesy television show and he invited his pal (and fellow musical legend in the making) Ray Charles to come on the show and plug his new album of country songs. After a bit of awkward banter between two musical icons, Charles launches into his very unique take on "Ring of Fire." It's not nearly as good as Cash's in our book, but it's definitely different and worth checking out.

“I’m not pro poppin’, I’m provocative, and pro stoppin’ them FBI operatives.”

You'd be hard pressed to find a funkier hip hop act than The Coup. And this animated video for their song "Ride The Fence" perfectly showcases the group's mix of political consciousness, fun and funk.

“Me and my girl, we got a relationship. I love her so bad, but she treats me like shit.”

This live clip features an all-star tribute band including members of Fishbone and Ozomatli who came together to salute Sublime. What's amazing, is despite all the talent on the stage, they still can't hold a candle to what Brad Nowell was able to do with this song. Still worth a watch though.

“Ha ha, bless your soul, do you really think you’re in control?”

No, this isn't the Gnarls Barkley version of "Crazy" that you've heard a hundred million times and are still somehow not sick of. This is English rockers The Kooks covering that Gnarls Barkley smash hit with a couple acoustic guitars as they roam the streets of Paris. It's kinda odd, and kinda cool.

“The principles of true hip hop have been forsaken, it’s all contractual and about money makin.”

You gotta love The Roots. Well, I guess technically you don't "have" to, you could just have bad taste in music. Regardless, the world's greatest hip hop band also happens to make some of the best hip hop videos out there and this one for their classic song "What They Do" may be their best ever.

"Music played and people sang, just for me the church bells rang."

A little over a year ago we saw The Raconteurs put on a fantastic show and the highlight without a doubt had to be their cover of Nancy Sinatra's "Bang Bang." It might be the best cover we've ever seen live and it still holds up on video.

David Sides is a guy who apparently taught himself to play piano. Then taught himself how to play hip hop songs on said piano. Then videotaped himself playing these songs. Then put those tapes on Youtube where millions of people have watched them. Check out his take on a medley of Kanye West songs to see why 27,000 people have already subscribed to his videos.

"Pop lockin', crip walkin', chronic blunts, G funk, a place that everybody hates but you gotta see once.”

It's possible we may be biased due to the fact that Whip It Out headquarters is in Los Angeles, but regardless you've got to appreciate the talents of LA-based rapper Murs. In this video he shows some love for his hometown and reminds residents that they're safe as long as they live north of Wilshire.

“My autobiography’s a story of strife overcome by a man who’s got nothing to lose, life is more colorful than a case of the blues.”

We can't pretend to know a whole lot about Sean Ward other than that he's from Toronto and that he's made a pretty cool video for a pretty catchy song called "I Was Made For This." Check it out, we're pretty sure it will make you wanna learn more about Sean as well.

"After a couple shots, man, they all hot. You can't tell me that you wouldn't fuck Jill Scott."

This surprisingly entertaining 10-minute documentary follows Chicago rhymer Rhymefest on a trip to Philadelphia to DJ Jazzy Jeff's suburban house and basement studio. It's packed with all kind of interesting stuff, including appearances by Jazzy Jeff's young musical phenom sons (including a 6-year-old who helps Rhymefest with his lyrics), Rhymefest explaining why he loves ugly girls, and an awkward moment when Rhymefest discovers that Jill Scott (about whom he's written a lyric) is the Godmother to Jeff's kids.

“They show the money to you, you show them what you can do.”

There's a long tradition of porn stars popping up (so to speak) in rock videos, but usually it's for the purpose of some token sex appeal. In this video for Rilo Kiley's "The Moneymaker," a trio of porn stars show up for more artistic purposes. Sort of.

One of the things we're excited about in launching this new website is that it gives us an excuse to search around and find some unusual videos. For example, this clip of De La Soul's press kit for their destined-to-be-classic album "3 Feet High and Rising." It's packed with interviews with the band, old performance clips, and "props" from their peers like Run DMC.

"I play it off but I'm dreaming of you."

Once upon a time before she "broke," we saw Macy Gray in concert and she put on a hell of a show. Fast forward about a decade, and we just came across this video of her performing live in Las Vegas for what looks like a crowd full of people who won tickets from the local easy listening radio station. Yikes. On a side note, why doesn’t Macy have any black fans? The crowd shots in this video - mostly of soccer moms and gay guys singing along - make it worth a watch.

We're happy to introduce a brand new feature (they're all brand new at this point) on Whip It Out Music - our Monday Morning Mixtape.

Every Monday morning, we're going to serve you up a Make-Your-Own Mixtape with a little help from the millions of music blogs out there posting great music on the regular. Each mix will feature 10 songs, chosen randomly and representing a variety of genres. The only thing that ties them together? They're fucking good, they're free to download, and you should do so and listen to them a lot over the coming week.

To download each song, click on the song title. Enjoy this debut edition of the WhipItOutMusic.com Monday Morning Mixtape...

"Roc Boyz" by Jay-Z
(Courtesy of Soul Sides)
Haven't been able to get this "American Gangster" track out of my head since the first time I heard it.

"Season's Greetings" by Robbers On High Street
(Courtesy of Here Comes The Flood)
Christmas comes early this year.

"Knockin' On Heaven's Door" by Antony & The Johnsons
(Courtesy of The Runout Groove)
From the soundtrack to the new Dylan movie I'm Not There.

"Passing Me By" by The Pharcyde
(Courtesy of Kiss Atlanta)
Classic. Timeless. What more can you ask for?

"Santa Clara" by The National
(Courtesy of Sixeyes)
If it's raining outside on Monday morning, this song is perfect. If it's sunny? Well, it's still pretty damn good.

"Beat Without Bass" by Lil Wayne
(Courtesy of I Guess I'm Floating)
You want to hate Weezy, but this is another reason why you can't.

"Please Please Please" by Shout Out Louds
(Courtesy of The Music Slut)
Whining never sounded so good.

"House of the Rising Sun" by Cat Power
(Courtesy of Some Blog We Can't Read)
One of the greatest songs of all time and one of the most unique takes on it.

"Tobacco" by Flogging Molly
(Courtesy of Minneapolis Fucking Rocks)
Nothing like a little Irish Pirate Punk to kickstart your week.

"Superstar" by Lupe Fiasco
(Courtesy of Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before)
Kanye's sidekick shows the student is well on his way to surpassing his master.

"A lot of people get confused and they bruise real easy when it comes to love."

Not exactly sure where this acoustic version of "The Denial Twist" came from - supposedly an Unplugged set that the White Stripes did, although we have no memory whatsoever of that ever happening. Regardless, it's a pretty cool stripped down version of Jack and Meg rocking out.

"I'm just a regular guy, I don't make that much money girl, I ain't gotta lie."

LA-based Pigeon John has to be one of our favorite hip hop acts that nobody seems to have heard of. We intend to change that by posting this great clip of his performance of "Money Back Guarantee" from On Network's Dinner With The Band.

"Cupid, please hear my cry and let your arrow fly."

We can't pretend to be huge Amy Winehouse fans - frankly, we think she's pretty overrated. However, we have to admit that we do love the kind of soul music she's tried to build a career around. And this live clip of her performing the Sam Cooke's classic "Cupid" with a solid backing band is well worth checking out.

"Legacies so ingrained in the way that we think that we no longer need chains to be slaves."

It's tougher and tougher to find quality hip hop these days, but every once in a while we come across something that reminds us why we used to love hip hop so much. This video from Minneapolis native Brother Ali sounds and looks like it could have come straight out the early '90s. We dare you not to like it.

"It's Thursday night, she should be out on the scene, but she's sitting at home watching King of Queens."

Sometimes you find good music where you least expect it - like on an airplane for example. A recent trip on Virgin America airlines led to the discovery of this video for Fountains of Wayne's Someone To Love which features comedian Demetri Martin and the catchy melodies and mildly amusing lyrics that the band's built a career on. Oh yeah, it's also got a nice surprise ending.

"It's a town full of losers and I'm pulling out of here to win."

Welcome to the first ever Whip It Out Music post. Since this is surely going to be a historic post (assuming this site eventually becomes bigger than Google, YouTube and Myspace combined), we want to make sure we kick things off with one of our favorite all time songs.

Bruce Springsteen has described Thunder Road as an invitation - an invitation which he delivered to the world in the mid 1970s offering them the chance to join him for a journey that he was about to set out on with his music and his band. So consider this video of him performing the song in 1976 as our invitation to you to join us on this new journey of our own.
